We’ve been learning how to code on our Ipads ! Using apps like Tynker , Scratch Junior and Playgrounds we have discovered how to control sprites by coding them to do what we want and our older classes have used Scratch to make their own video game, animated stories and music !
We learned about how gears work by making our own ! When we turned our gears we saw that a small gear will generate the power to turn a big gear and that a big gear will turn a small gear quickly to generate speed !
We took part in the 25 minute tower challenge ! We got into groups and were given 20 minutes to design and build the tallest tower we could using only 20 pieces of spaghetti and insulation tape. Each tower had to have a marshmallow on top in order to be complete !
Our staff devised Maths trails around the school grounds for every class level! We love to go on a maths trail on a sunny day !
As part of our Seachtain na Gaeilge we made shops in our older classes selling sweets and treats. Our younger classes visited the shops and were given money to buy the sweets with both shop keeper and customer using their mathematical learning in a real-world setting !
Our 5th and 6th classes took part in the Intel Mini-Scientist award again this year. They devised amazing science projects which they showcased in our school hall. Each class in the school had a chance to tour the projects and talk to the mini scientists about their work and see their amazing experiments and discoveries in action !
We hope you enjoyed looking at the photos as much as we enjoyed participating in all of the STEM activities !!
Healthy lunches in junior infants. (And no plastic wrapping!)
Oak Tree planting at the school by Gorey Tidy Towns/Gorey 400.
Action on Climate Change. Prize-winning writing! Our Activity Room: motor skills. Heritage in Schools workshops: ‘clay leaf bowls.’ Healthy Lifestyles assembly by 3rd class. Environmental assembly by Senior Infants.
We have been learning all about sound in our science lessons. We kept a sound diary for one week and we also made a chart of the different types of sounds around us we hear everyday.
We made our very own musical instruments using recycled materials: A plastic bottle and some scrap paper to design.
We then added some rice and created our very own musical shakers!
