Learn Together news
Throughout the month of September the children in our school settle back into school-life and their new classes. One of the most significant parts of the Learn Together curriculum at this time of year is developing a Class Charter. This is a list of rights and responsibilities devised by the children with the help and guidance of their teacher. One of the four strands underpinning the ethos of Educate Together schools is ‘Child-Centeredness’. This means that children in our school are involved in decisions by which they will be affected, where appropriate.
While deciding what rights they would like to see on their class charter, the children are encouraged to think about not only how this applies to themselves but what responsibilities they have in order to ensure that all the children in their class can also be afforded those rights. The children make suggestions for rewards and sanctions which they feel would work well in their class during the year. Other rewards and sanctions laid out in the school’s code of behaviour are also explained by the teacher to aid this process. When finalised the children sign a copy of the charter and are encouraged to share the information with their families. The class charter is considered a working charter and is revisited regularly during the school year and is used as a basis for clarity of expectations by both children & teachers. The two photos show an example of a class charter from a junior class and a senior class from September 2011. Andrea Maher, classteacher
