Thursday 8th May 2014
Once again we thought the Irish weather would prevent our eager gardener’s from getting their hands dirty. But thankfully it cleared long enough for our French & Haribut Beans to be planted. Also planted this week in our raised beds at the front of the school are:
Courgettes, cucumber, lettuce, salad leaves, brussels sprouts, cabbage, squash, tomatoes and sunflowers. And carrot seeds were sown while weeding the beds. Busy, busy, busy………………………!!!
Thursday 1st May 2014
Rain hampered our school gardener’s progress today but not their enthusiasm. Our strawberries arrived by post which were duly planted and we inspected the growth of our giant pumpkins which are still ahead of all other plants.
Thursday 17th & 24th April 2014
School may be on holidays but the seedlings certainly aren’t. Great growth at the moment due to the lovely weather we are having. Our Giant Pumpkin is still ahead in size, with a stem 10 inches high and 2 leaves the size of a child’s hand. Lot’s of help will be needed in May for parents who can give a little of their time. No skill needed!! Just be prepared for dirty hands as we start planting out our seedlings. Every Thursday at 12.30pm……all welcome! Hope to see you there.
Thursday 10th April 2014
Our school gardeners were busy today conducting a site assessment, making essential decisions such as which beds are best suited to our future seedlings that were sown last week. Already many of the seeds have successfully germinated, with our giant pumpkin being one of the first to come to the surface. Let’s hope it’s a good indication of it’s future keenness to grow.
Don’t forget the open invitation to all parents to get involved in our school garden; gardening knowledge is not essential. Work is on-going, drop by any Thursday @ 12. 30pm. We would be delighted to see you!!
Thursday 3rd April 2014
Seed sowing! And lot’s of it. High on our school gardeners priority list today was sowing seeds to be kept in propagators. This will allow us to get ahead of the growing season ensuring we have strong and healthy seedlings to plant out when the weather gets warmer. Delicate seedlings such as Melon, Courgettes, French Beans and Cucumber will benefit hugely from this increase in growing time.
Monday 24th March
Our five school gardeners had their first meeting today to discuss what to grow this year. It is the aim of our gardeners to have two harvests; one by the end of June, just before we close for our summer break. And the other in Sept/Oct, just in time to collect beautiful produce to use in our Winter Fair.
Top of the list of produce that the gardeners want to grow are:- Pumkins, sunflowers, carrots and potatoes.
The gardeners will be working particularly hard every Thursday at 12.30pm, all parental help would be hugely beneficial. Drop in, as and when you can.
Hopefully see you on Thursdays @ 12.30…………………….all skill levels appreciated.
